I want to thank all those who have given financially to our church benevolence accounts to assist with both nonmembers and our own church members. Our budget has not provided adequate funds for the great needs that we have encountered so far this year and your generosity is greatly appreciated. Without going into details, I can assure you that you are making a difference. There have been countless members and nonmembers who are literally at their ropes end and come to us for a final hope of assistance. Were we not at the end of their rope they may learn to envision a noose! May it never be because of us. May it never be because of what God has done for us and is doing through us. It is all about God's grace and mercy and glorifying God by worship and service.

New Ways to Serve and Plug in...
We have a number of ways you can get connected right now. Talk to these individuals about opportunities to serve:
Steve Wynn or Terry Hall: Baptist Men's Disaster Relief continues to train and serve. We're still helping those affected by the tornadoes from April 16th.
Kimsey Welch: Talk to Kimsey about the once a month Saturday morning service projects to help church members in need. Usually these are physical labor projects (yard work, painting, light construction, etc.).
Brenda Hardee: Summer will bring some new opportunities in work with our international education ministry team. They have their own "Jump Start" that offers time for these students to get prepared early and there is a week of Vacation Bible School type events for them which is always a blast. Drivers are always needed and appreciated!
Sharon Bender or Richard Seagle: Both our children and youth ministries will be running in high gear this summer. Whether you can help with VBS or want to assist on a trip, Sharon and Richard can tell you what, who and when help is needed. You may only be able to help with one week this summer, but they could surely use you help and assistance.
Information about Federal Aid for victims of tornado damage:
DISASTER ASSISTANCE TO NORTH CAROLINA TOPS $5 MILLION
RALEIGH, N.C. – Federal and state grants and loans totaling more than $5 million have been approved to help North Carolinians in 18 counties recover from the April 16 severe storms and tornadoes.
Through Wednesday, May 4, 2011:
• $2.9 million has been approved from FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program for temporary housing and home repairs.
• $1.08 million has been approved in Other Needs Assistance, a joint state-federal program that helps replace personal property and pay medical, dental, transportation and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs.
• $1.2 million has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and businesses.
Other figures:
• 6,850 people have registered with FEMA for state and federal disaster assistance.
• 3,810 damaged homes have been inspected by FEMA.
• Nearly 3,800 loan packages have been issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loan program. These loans are available to homeowners and renters as well as businesses and nonprofit organizations of all sizes.
• More than 2,750 residents have visited disaster recovery centers operated jointly by FEMA and North Carolina Emergency Management, with support from SBA.
• State and FEMA Community Relations specialists who continue to go door-to-door providing information in English and Spanish to people affected by the tornadoes have visited more than 9,600 homes and talked to more than 9,400 people. They have also visited 1,483 businesses,
126 community organizations and more than 630 faith-based organizations.
Individuals can register for disaster assistance with FEMA by going online to www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 800-462-7585.
President Obama issued a Major Disaster Declaration on April 19 that made federal aid available to supplement the state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms, tornadoes and flooding. In addition to Individual Assistance for disaster survivors, federal funding also is available to state and eligible local governments, and certain private nonprofit organizations, for debris removal and emergency protective measures.
The North Carolina counties under the disaster declaration are Bertie, Bladen, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Greene, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Onslow, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Wake and Wilson.
For more information about this disaster, go to www.nccrimecontrol.org and click on the red “April Tornadoes” tab. More information is also available at www.fema.gov.
Disaster recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status. If you or someone you know has been discriminated against, call FEMA toll-free at 800-621-FEMA (3362). For TTY call 800-462-7585.
FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
